Shillong: The Meghalaya Cabinet approved 50 acres of land in Mawkhanu to house the proposed St. Xavier’s University. Officials set the price at a concessional rate of one lakh rupees per hectare. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said, "The government viewed the project as an investment in youth and expected it to strengthen higher education opportunities for students from the state and the Northeast."
State leaders also moved to boost the local economy. They signed off on buying nearly four acres in West Jaintia Hills for a Lakadong turmeric processing plant. This project comes with a 187 crore rupee price tag. The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region will cover most of the cost. The state will kick in roughly 35 crore rupees to help local growers reach new markets.
Tourism and tech projects got a cash injection too. Developers operating the Orchid Resort now have the green light to upgrade the site into a five-star property. They must pay a five crore rupee deposit and share four percent of their annual turnover with the government. Meanwhile, the state added 36 crore rupees to the second IT Park budget. The extra money pays for more office space and a central air-conditioning system to lure international firms.
