Imphal: Manipur’s Transporters and Drivers’ Council wants a federal inquiry into how the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited handled the NH-37 project. They sent a memo to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways citing dangerous road conditions and massive delays. The Imphal-Jiribam route stays a wreck despite years of work and heavy spending.
Drivers face constant breakdowns and accidents. The group claims poor oversight caused frequent landslides that leave commuters stranded and vulnerable to security threats. They say the agency handed off big chunks of work to subcontractors without watching over the quality, leading to shoddy results and zero accountability.
The council wants a high-level committee to finish a audit of the project’s technical and financial records. They asked the ministry to make the project report and spending details public. Describing NH-37 as Manipur’s second lifeline, the council stated, "The Imphal-Jiribam highway remains in a deplorable condition despite years of construction and substantial public expenditure."
They want immediate repairs on the most damaged sections. The council warned of upcoming democratic protests if the government ignores these demands to fix the mess.
