Manipur Students Federation Slams Government Over Teacher Shortages

Imphal: The Manipur Students Federation claims the state government ignored its duty to staff schools it upgraded three years ago. Student leaders inspected two campuses and found a disaster. The classrooms are packed, but the teachers are missing.

Ayekpam Jimba Meitei, the federation vice-president, led the inspection of Oinam Higher Secondary School in Bishnupur and Khonghampat Higher Secondary School in Imphal West. These two sites were among 19 schools bumped up to higher secondary status in 2021. Today, they remain hollow shells of actual learning institutions.

Oinam Higher Secondary School has 700 students but employs only five lecturers. Khonghampat Higher Secondary School fares little better with just six. Primary and high school teachers are filling the gap to keep doors open. Meitei blasted the current state of affairs during a press briefing today. He stated, "The federation questioned whether the government intended to run higher secondary schools with such inadequate staffing."

The federation accused Zonal Education Offices of failing to watch over these facilities. They claim administrators ignored the rot for years. MSF demands the Education Department fill vacant posts now. Students need subject experts, not stand-ins, to get a real education.
