Manipur Security Forces Seize Brown Sugar Worth Over Rs 1 Crore

Imphal: Manipur Police and central security forces arrested four individuals in Churachandpur district on Monday for allegedly smuggling a large quantity of narcotics. The joint operation resulted in the seizure of 153 soap cases containing approximately 1.35 kilograms of suspected brown sugar, which officials estimate is worth more than Rs 1 crore on the international market.

The initial phase of the operation took place in the Tongdam area, where officers apprehended Pauzathang, 45, of Singngat village, Ginpu Zou, 39, of Thingkangphai village, and Kailunmang, 30, of Hiangtam village. Authorities recovered 67 soap cases containing 670 grams of the drug from the trio. Following interrogation, security forces tracked a Maruti Alto to the Headquarters Veng area and arrested the driver, 44-year-old Thongkhosei Haokip. A search of the vehicle yielded an additional 77 soap cases containing 680 grams of suspected brown sugar.

Officials confirmed that all four suspects were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2023. Regarding the ongoing efforts to curb illegal trade, police stated, "All accused have been booked under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Amendment) Act, 2023."

In a separate enforcement action, authorities conducted a routine inspection at the Wangoi Police Station gate in Imphal West district. During the check, security personnel recovered 240 cans of beer. The contraband was seized and subsequently handed over to the Excise Station at Hiyangthang to initiate legal proceedings.
