Manipur Revenue Dips By 1,200 Crore As Strikes Cripple Local Economy

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh warned that the ongoing state conflict has wiped out over Rs 1,200 crore in GST revenue. He spoke on October 6 at the Yaorang Sabal Community Hall in Patsoi Part IV, Imphal West. The event, part of the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, drew a crowd from the Patsoi Assembly Constituency seeking access to government welfare schemes.

Economic recovery remains stalled. Daily shutdowns cost the state between Rs 20 crore and Rs 25 crore every single day. The Chief Minister pointed to the human cost of these disruptions. "Government employees wouldn't be affected by a bandh. They will receive their salary even if there is a bandh or general strike. It is the daily earners who bear the brunt of the bandh," Khemchand said.

He urged civil society groups to swap strikes for dialogue. He linked local stability to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of achieving a developed India by 2047. Khemchand noted India has climbed from 11th to fourth in global economic rankings during Modi's 25 years in public office. Lasting progress, he argued, requires reducing the trust deficit between local communities.

Patsoi MLA Sapam Kunjakeswor added that the state is pushing for peace. He cited the reopening of national highways as a key sign of progress. The Imphal West district administration event featured over 30 service stalls, which saw high participation from residents and senior officials, including the deputy commissioner.
