Imphal: Manipur is moving to put state police commandos back on its highways. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam confirmed plans to reinstate Road Opening Patrol duty to stop extortion of fuel and supply trucks. The state faces a major manpower shortage. Officials are currently hunting for ways to solve this deficit and get boots on the ground.
Extortion rings frequently target trucks on two main lifelines. National Highway 37 connects Imphal to Silchar, while National Highway 2 links the capital to Dimapur. These roads keep the landlocked state supplied with food and fuel. Konthoujam addressed reporters on Sunday, August 2, regarding the initiative. "Earlier, state police commandos used to be deployed on the highways for ROP duty. We are trying to deploy them," the minister said.
The administration wants to secure these supply chains. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh chaired a meeting Saturday to address the movement of petroleum tankers. Officials formed a new coordination committee. This group will revise the standard operating procedure for LPG and fuel convoys traveling the Imphal-Silchar route. Government leaders believe this combined approach will finally clamp down on criminal disruptions.
