Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh launched two major sanitation programs at his Secretariat in Imphal on Thursday. The initiatives, named Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 and the Clean Himalayan Hill Cities Initiative, aim to overhaul waste management across the state. The state government wants public participation. Singh urged residents and local bodies to back the campaigns to clean up the hill regions.
The Manipur Urban Development Agency is running the show. Singh said the goal is to shift how people handle trash. He noted the state needs a "Whole of Society" approach to address solid waste and sanitation challenges, particularly in ecologically sensitive hill regions. The programs provide training and support to Urban Local Bodies while building better infrastructure for waste disposal.
Swachhata Hi Seva runs from September 17 to October 2. It mandates four-way waste segregation at the source and pushes waste-to-wealth practices. Meanwhile, the 100-day Clean Himalayan Hill Cities Initiative focuses on conservation, capacity building, and Behaviour Change Communication. Officials will also target the protection of heritage and iconic sites throughout the mission.
