Imphal: Retired Major Motimala Ngangom received the first-ever Mother of Manipur NCC award on September 13. The NCC Alumni Foundation honored her for mentoring generations of cadets over three decades. Ngangom served the organization from 1984 to 2018. She worked as the Lady Commander for the North East Region and later as the All India In-charge for Cultural affairs. She also taught Hindi at GP Women's College.
The veteran, now in her 70s, remains the only person from Manipur to receive the Raksha Mantri Padak, an honor she earned in 1994. Reflecting on her career, Ngangom said, "It was a memorable experience to work with cadets and take responsibility for their participation in events including the Republic Day Parade." She continues to advocate for the NCC as a tool to build discipline and national pride among young people.
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister N Biren Singh sounded an alarm on September 19. He labeled the drug trade in the Northeast a dangerous national threat. Singh governed Manipur from 2017 until February 2025. He argued that the state's porous border makes it a critical flashpoint for cartels. Singh claimed he fought these illicit networks for years despite intense resistance. He insists the battle against narcotics must be relentless. The former leader urged officials to stop viewing the crisis as a minor local issue.
