Imphal: Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam announced the deployment of two additional CoBRA battalions of the Central Reserve Police Force to stabilize the state's deteriorating law and order situation. The specialised units, trained for guerrilla combat and jungle warfare, are expected to bolster security operations in a region currently facing a shortage of personnel.

The minister spoke at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal after meeting the families of six Naga civilians whose bodies were recently discovered. The victims had been abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district on May 13. Referencing the limited capacity of current security forces, Konthoujam stated, "We have very limited security forces. But now with the recent deployment of two COBRA battalions, I think the situation will improve."

Konthoujam condemned the killings as a heinous crime and promised that the state government would ensure those responsible are brought to justice. His comments followed the earlier release of 14 Kuki individuals who had been held captive by Naga armed groups for nearly a month. The minister praised the effort to release the captives as an act of humanity and acknowledged the police chief's work in locating the missing civilians.

While the state is increasing its military presence, officials continue to stress that peace requires active public participation. The minister noted that security forces face significant challenges without the cooperation of residents in both the hill and valley regions. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh echoed this stance in a firm statement, asserting that the administration would not remain a "mute spectator" to such atrocities. The government has vowed to identify, arrest, and punish everyone involved in the recent violence.
