Liangmai Naga blockade of National Highway 2 enters eighth day

Imphal: An economic blockade on National Highway 2 in Manipur entered its eighth day as the Liangmai Naga community continues to protest the murder of six of its members. Led by the Koubru Range Liangmai Women Union, the demonstration at Namdilong in Imphal West district seeks to force authorities to act after the victims went missing on May 13 and were discovered deceased earlier this week.

Volunteers have maintained a constant presence at the site to block commercial trucks heading toward Gamgiphai and Kangpokpi. While the group permits the movement of private vehicles, emergency services, and security convoys, the blockade has halted the flow of essential goods along one of the state's primary supply routes.

The current unrest stems from broader tensions between the Naga and Kuki communities following violent clashes and kidnappings that occurred on May 13. This period of instability included the deaths of three Kuki or Thadou individuals. Civil society groups have expressed outrage over the recent findings, stating that the "blockade will continue as a mark of protest and to press for justice for the victims."

Local authorities are monitoring the situation as concerns grow over the impact on food and resource supplies for Manipur. With no resolution currently in sight, the blockade remains a focal point for the region as leaders worry about the potential for further communal strain.
