Shillong: Laban market shoppers are fighting back against new parking fees. Officials cut the rate from 40 to 20 rupees after initial pushback. It did not stop the anger. Motorists claim attendants demand cash even during short stops to drop off passengers or load groceries.
"I have no objection to paying a parking fee if I actually park my vehicle and use a parking space. But if I stop for less than a minute to drop someone or collect a few items before leaving, I don’t think that should be considered parking," one resident said.
Critics want clear, posted rules. They demand a formal distinction between active loading and long-term parking. Many worry the current system hurts seniors who need curb access. Others point to a lack of accountability. Attendants take the money but refuse to accept any responsibility if a car gets stolen or damaged.
Supporters argue the fees are necessary to stop traffic gridlock. They claim the charge clears out cars that used to sit for hours. Despite this, the public is calling for local authorities to intervene. They want transparent policies and a system that punishes hogging spots rather than charging people for a quick stop.
