Imphal: The Kuki Inpi Manipur, the top representative body for Kuki tribes, wants a separate administration. It now demands a Union Territory with its own legislature under the Constitution of India. This move follows the 8th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, which met on September 2. The Kuki Inpi Manipur issued a statement on September 5 claiming the state ignored urgent humanitarian needs and human rights violations.
KIM officials point to deep institutional bias. They claim the Assembly prioritizes majoritarian politics over peace. The organization explicitly cited what it termed “physical, administrative, and political segregation” as evidence that the Kuki-Zo community cannot find protection under an Imphal-centric government. They describe this push for autonomy as an “existential imperative” for safeguarding their land, identity, and security.
Violence remains a major trigger for the demand. The group alleges that three Kuki-Zo Christian leaders were ambushed and killed near Saheibung on May 13, 2026. The victims were returning from a reconciliation meeting in Churachandpur. KIM claims the state failed to conduct a transparent investigation into these deaths. Furthermore, the body alleges that economic lifelines and supply corridors to their areas remain blocked, choking off food and medicine.
The group is now appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. They want the Union Government to step in directly to address these injustices and secure territorial borders. The Kuki Inpi Media Cell released the statement, urging the public to verify all information through their official website to ensure accuracy in reporting.
