Shillong: The Khasi Students’ Union Laban Circle Education Cell wants Khasi taught in Laban classrooms. Chairman Kevin Nelson Wanrap and secretary Andrew P. Kharbithai met with the principals of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School and Laban Bengalee Girls’ Higher Secondary School on Monday. They handed over separate memos demanding the schools offer the subject by the 2027 academic session.
Parents complained that their children cannot study their mother tongue at these schools. Both institutions have stood for over a century without adding the language to their course lists. The union claims this neglect hurts students and ignores the need to protect indigenous culture. They argue language acts as the backbone of identity, history, and community knowledge.
Wanrap said students struggle to pursue the language when schools block access. He wants every school in the Laban area to adopt the subject. "This is not the first time that the KSU has taken up the issue. We have repeatedly urged educational institutions to recognise the importance of Khasi and ensure that students are given the opportunity to study their own language. We hope the authorities will respond positively to this demand," Wanrap said. The union pledged to help the schools prepare for the transition.
