KSU Demands Action Over Medicine Shortages at Khliehriat Civil Hospital

Shillong: The Khasi Students Union (KSU) is demanding urgent government intervention following reports of a severe medicine shortage at Khliehriat Civil Hospital. Patients have been forced to source essential supplies from private pharmacies, a practice that places a significant financial burden on families from lower economic backgrounds.

A KSU delegation led by East Jaintia Hills District Unit President Streamly S. Suchen met with the District Medical and Health Officer and the Medical Superintendent on June 3 to address the issue. During the discussion, hospital officials revealed that they lack precise data on stock levels. They attributed this lack of oversight to the absence of a full-time Drug Inspector in the district, as the current official is juggling responsibilities for both West and East Jaintia Hills.

The health officials assured the delegation they would raise the matter with higher authorities. However, the KSU remains firm in its request for a permanent appointment. "The KSU has demanded that the state government immediately appoint a full-time Drug Inspector for the district," the union stated. The organization intends to escalate the matter by meeting with the Health Minister to ensure a swift resolution to the crisis.
