Shillong: Members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) organized a symbolic protest in Shillong on Thursday to press for long-standing regional demands. The group displayed posters and banners in prominent areas of the city to coincide with the arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is in the Meghalaya capital for a meeting of the North Eastern Council.
The student organization is calling for the implementation of the Inner Line Permit to address illegal immigration and a formal ban on uranium mining. Additionally, the group is advocating for better employment prospects for local youth, specifically requesting that institutions like the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences prioritize indigenous recruits.
KSU general secretary Reuben Anderson Najiar explained that the move was intended to bring these ongoing concerns to the attention of federal leadership. Najiar stated that the initiative was "aimed at drawing the attention of Shah and other Union ministers to issues that remain unresolved despite repeated appeals."
The banners were set up along routes in the Polo area during the gathering of governors and chief ministers from across the northeast. The KSU described the demonstration as peaceful and requested that local police leave the posters in place, noting that the displays did not cause any obstruction to traffic or public safety.
