KHADC Revokes Pastor's Marriage Licence Amid Church Dispute

Shillong: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council stripped Rev MacDonald Pyngrope of his marriage licence. The decision follows a formal petition from the Khasi Jaintia Presbyterian Synod Sepngi. They notified the council that the church officially withdrew Pyngrope’s ordination. He lost his authority to perform weddings. The June 26 order takes effect immediately.

The council acted under the United Khasi-Jaintia Hills District (Christian Marriage) Act. Officials reviewed legal documents from both sides before issuing the final notice. The council claims it followed strict legal protocol. It observed all principles of natural justice during the review process.

Council leaders clarified they remain neutral regarding church politics. They stated: "The council’s consideration was confined solely to the exercise of its statutory responsibilities under the applicable marriage laws." The council does not get involved in ecclesiastical disputes like the withdrawal of ordination.

This move highlights a deepening crisis at Mawkhar Presbyterian Church. The congregation faces allegations of fund misappropriation exceeding Rs 4 crore. Police are still looking into two separate vandalism attacks against the pastor’s vehicle. No link exists between the car damage and the licence revocation.
