Gangtok: A significant wildfire that broke out near the high-altitude Kupup village in East Sikkim has been successfully contained following a rigorous joint effort by the Indian Army, civil administration, and local residents. The blaze, which began on January 20, was categorized as a sensitive incident due to its close proximity to the India-China border and critical military infrastructure situated along the Zero Line.

Residents in the area reported hearing loud bursting sounds as the fire spread, raising immediate concerns. Military sources clarified that these noises were likely triggered by landmines detonating under the intense heat of the inferno. Fortunately, authorities have confirmed that there have been no casualties resulting from the incident.
