Guwahati: Jhandu Kumar grabbed the bronze medal in the Men's Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event on July 25. He put India on the board in Glasgow. This win serves as the country's first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the athlete's performance on X. He noted that the win provides a strong start for the national campaign. Sarma lauded the powerlifter's career and effort.
"The first medal for India at #CWG2026 is here! Congratulations to Jhandu Kumar on winning Bronze in the Men's Heavyweight Para Powerlifting event. His inspiring journey & remarkable achievement have made the nation proud. Wishing him continued success and many more laurels for India," the Chief Minister wrote.
The podium finish secures a historic opening for the Indian squad. Sarma remains hopeful for future results.
