Kohima: Jesse Thonger released his new book, Chutu Manu, on September 12 at The White Owl in Chümoukedima. Published by Heritage Publishing House, the work hits hard on identity, corruption, and tribalism within Naga society. Viketuno Rio served as the special guest for the launch event. She praised the 24-year-old author for his bold engagement with the world.
Rio told the crowd that young people who question their society hold the power to shape the future. She stated, "A valuable role of a book was not to tell people what to think but to encourage them to think." She wants the book to spark real debate in classrooms and across the community.
Reviewer Vinolen John noted the writing blends conversational prose with a stream-of-consciousness style. The book tracks issues like history, injustice, and unemployment. It also addresses the complexities of Eastern Nagaland politics. The title translates to "small man." It signals the author's choice to speak for the ordinary person rather than the powerful elite.
Thonger describes his work as a critique of everything Naga. He uses his platform to highlight the diversity of the state and the struggles of those labeled backward. In his author's note, Thonger insisted on remaining humble. He explained that his title reflects a desire to stay curious and admit when he does not know an answer. Chairperson Bobita Rai concluded the event, noting that while a writer works in isolation, the book now belongs to the public to drive change.
