Jakrem Residents Seek Relief from Two-Year Water Crisis

Shillong: Jakrem residents have lived through a water crisis for two years. Erratic supply, low voltage, and failing equipment plague the village. Mission, Laitmawbah, Nonghalait, and Sngimietnah are the worst hit areas.

The Village Water and Sanitation Committee blames the PHE Mawkyrwat Division for the mess. Current pumps are over 20 years old. They break down constantly. The committee says the Jal Jeevan Mission rollout failed to add enough storage tanks to cover demand.

The PHE department points to low electricity voltage as the primary cause for the mechanical failures. Officials claim they have repeatedly pushed the department for a fix. Help is finally on the horizon.

A new water project will pull from the Rilang River. The local MLA laid the foundation stone for the initiative. The department has already invited tenders for the work. The village executive dorbar and the committee stated, "The village executive dorbar expressed hope that the new initiative will provide lasting relief." They thanked the PHE Mawkyrwat Division for their role in the project.
