Shillong: The Jaiñtia National Council Khliehriat Circle joined forces with Dkhiah East Secondary School on Friday to celebrate World Environment Day 2026. Held at the school campus in East Jaiñtia Hills District, the event focused on the global theme of nature-inspired climate action and the school’s local mission to revive and rebuild through direct community involvement.

Dr. B. Nongtdu, the school headmaster, chaired the program and welcomed various community leaders, including the Headman of Dkhiah East, Shri P. Nongtdu. Senior representatives from the JNC Khliehriat Circle attended, alongside Special Guest Shri Wanshwa Suting, the General Secretary of the JNC Central Executive Committee. The day combined educational engagement with practical conservation efforts, featuring a student drawing competition and a sapling plantation drive to encourage long-term environmental stewardship.

Speakers at the event highlighted the significant ecological challenges facing the region due to industrial expansion. During his address, School Managing Committee member Shri Rafael Labon warned that local students are suffering the consequences of environmental damage, noting, "Since the industrial revolution took place in East Jaiñtia, many trees and hills have been cut down."

Shri Wanshwa Suting echoed these concerns while reflecting on the area's history. He emphasized that the once clean and healthy landscape has been compromised by external industrial interests. The event served as a call to action for the community to reclaim and protect their natural heritage for future generations.
