Imphal: Bir Tikendrajit International Airport has seen significant growth in both air traffic and passenger numbers over the past 12 years. Airport Director Chipemmi Keishing announced these developments during a briefing regarding the upcoming Yatri Suvidha Diwas on June 15, an initiative focused on improving the overall travel experience for passengers.
Located eight kilometres south of Imphal, the facility serves as a vital transportation hub for Manipur, particularly as the state lacks rail connectivity and faces frequent road disruptions. Since receiving official international status in 2013, the airport has worked to expand its operational capacity. While regular international routes are still in the planning stages, the airport has successfully hosted chartered international flights and maintains the infrastructure required for global operations.
The growth in service frequency is substantial. In 2014, the facility managed only eight total flights daily with fewer than 500 passengers. Today, the airport oversees more than 32 scheduled arrivals and departures each day, with daily aircraft movements often exceeding 50 when non-scheduled flights are included. Currently, the airport serves approximately 6,000 passengers every day.
Regarding the upcoming awareness event, Keishing explained that the initiative is a customer-centric program aimed at reaffirming a commitment to high standards. He stated that Yatri Suvidha Diwas, meaning "Passenger Convenience Day," will serve as an opportunity to showcase recent infrastructure milestones. The airport now offers connections to major metropolitan cities across India and has bolstered regional ties through the government UDAN scheme.
