Husband Arrested Following Wife's Death in Eastern West Khasi Hills

Shillong: Police arrested 31-year-old Kursur L Mawlong in Eastern West Khasi Hills after his wife turned up dead. The victim, Sperly Syngkli, hailed from Umkaduh village in Ri-Bhoi district. She left home on October 3 to stay with Mawlong in Maroid village. She died three days later.

Family members found her unresponsive in the early hours of October 6. They hauled her body back to Umkaduh before alerting the Nongpoh Police Station. Mairang police opened a case on October 7. They filed charges under Sections 103(1) for murder and 238(a) for destroying evidence under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Authorities sent the remains to Civil Hospital in Nongpoh for a post-mortem exam. Results remain pending. A Crime Scene Unit combed the Maroid home and seized several items. Police held Mawlong after initial questioning. A police statement confirmed, "Mawlong was formally arrested following preliminary questioning, and further investigation is under way." Detectives continue to build their case.
