Shillong: The Achik Holistic Awakening Movement wants a four-lane expressway connecting Shillong and Tura. The group submitted a formal request to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma this past Sunday. They argue the state must stop patching up the old road and build a modern route instead.
Current infrastructure is a death trap. The existing mountain road features sharp curves, narrow lanes, and steep climbs that choke traffic flow. AHAM says these conditions make travel a nightmare for locals. They described the current route as "physically demanding" and dangerous for anyone behind the wheel.
Economic growth depends on this link. The group noted that other regional corridors like the Dhubri-Phulbari project are getting four-lane upgrades. Meanwhile, the most vital connection between Meghalaya's two major hubs stays stuck in the past. Long travel times put patients heading to NEIGRIHMS for emergency care at severe risk.
A modern highway would better integrate the state. It would also speed up the movement of agricultural goods and spark local trade. AHAM insists the government must act now to bridge this gap.
