Imphal: Former Manipur BJP president A. Sharda Devi has been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha. The victory followed the withdrawal of all other candidates by the June 11 deadline, leading the Returning Officer and Secretary of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to confirm her appointment to the state's lone upper house seat.

The election was triggered by the upcoming end of incumbent BJP member Maharaja Sanajaoba Leishemba's term, which expires on June 21. Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam joined other party legislators to witness the official declaration at the assembly.

Addressing supporters at the BJP office in Imphal, Sharda Devi outlined her primary legislative goals. She stated, "I would focus on development-related issues concerning women and work towards strengthening women’s empowerment."

State leaders were quick to welcome the news. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh noted on social media that her extensive political background would bolster good governance and inclusive development in the region. The state BJP unit echoed this sentiment, crediting her successful bid to years of committed service to the party and the local public.

The BJP maintains a strong majority in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly with 36 seats. The remaining assembly seats are split between the National People's Party, Naga People's Front, Congress, Kuki People's Alliance, Janata Dal, and several independent members.
