Gangtok: A forged government document circulating on social media has triggered widespread panic and a series of police investigations in Sikkim. The fake notification falsely claimed that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs was planning to merge Darjeeling Hills, Kalimpong, Terai, and Dooars with the state of Sikkim. The document appeared to bear the signature of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, though the Press Information Bureau confirmed it is entirely fabricated.

Sikkim officials moved quickly to address the misinformation, describing it as a malicious attempt to incite public alarm and undermine regional stability. The state Home Department ordered an immediate investigation, and the case has been transferred to the Cyber Crime Police Station. Investigators are currently tracing digital footprints and coordinating with social media platforms to remove the content and identify those responsible.

Political leaders across the spectrum have condemned the act. The ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha party filed a formal complaint, as did the Sikkim unit of the BJP. Party leaders emphasized the sensitivity of the situation, noting the state's strategic location along the border and an upcoming visit from the President of India. Authorities have urged citizens to disregard the document and rely strictly on official government channels for accurate information.
