Guwahati: Rising waters from the Dikhow River have shredded rail connectivity across the Northeast. The Northeast Frontier Railway halted operations on the Simaluguri to NMT and Simaluguri to SLX sections after tracks and nearby colonies went underwater. Authorities flagged the area as unsafe and began immediate repairs.
The disruption hit hard. The latest bulletin reports 18 total cancellations. Officials diverted 19 trains and short-terminated or partially cancelled another 12 services. Impacted routes include the Rajdhani Express, Vivek Express, Kamrup Express, Nagaland Express, Arunachal Express, and Amrit Bharat Express. Several Intercity and DEMU passenger trains are also stalled.
Divisional Railway Manager Parag Katre said teams are working through the night. "Our teams are engaged in dewatering inundated tracks and railway yards, repairing damaged railway infrastructure, strengthening embankments and restoring signalling systems to ensure the earliest possible resumption of train services," Katre stated. He hopes for a return to normal operations within two weeks, weather permitting.
Rail officials are scrambling to help passengers. They set up road transport for the blocked section and launched a special train between Sivasagar Town and New Tinsukia. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Techi Kumar confirmed the department is processing ticket refunds now. They are also planning a new daily special train between Bhojo and Dibrugarh. Travellers should check official enquiry channels for updates before heading to the station.
