Experts Push to Save Indigenous Cow Breeds in Nagaland

Kohima: Veterinary experts gathered at the Jalukie campus on June 19 to address the future of local cattle. They held a scientific workshop focused on the conservation of indigenous cow breeds. The goal remains clear. Protect native genetic resources to ensure climate resilience and support rural livelihoods.

Dean Dr. I. Shakuntala led the program. She argued that native cattle are vital for long-term agricultural success. Dr. Kathiraven P., a principal scientist at ICAR NRC on Mithun, laid out the technical path forward. He pushed for specific breeding strategies and policy changes to stop population declines. He noted, "The role of indigenous breeds in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring long term agricultural sustainability" is essential.

Dr. Kedozul Ltu from the Nagaland Livestock Development Board pointed to current field work. The board relies on community involvement and institutional backing to keep these herds alive. An interactive session followed the presentations. Researchers and local stakeholders debated the best ways to apply these findings. The group finished the day with a firm pledge to boost conservation efforts across the state.
