Imphal: Retired IRS officer Gaigongdin Panmei joined the BJP on Thursday. He signed up at the party headquarters in Imphal, Thambal Sanglen. BJP Manipur President A. Sharda Devi oversaw the induction. Panmei previously served as the Principal Director General of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs.
His move signals an early start for the BJP ahead of the 2027 legislative assembly elections. The party aims to secure support in the Naga-heavy Tamenglong district. Panmei cited the party's governance and national development goals as his primary reasons for signing on.
Sharda Devi welcomed the newcomer to the party ranks. She stated, "I extend my heartfelt welcome to Shri Gaigongdin Panmei as he joins the BJP family." She noted his past work in public service will help the state. The BJP leader also addressed the ongoing ethnic unrest in the region. She rejected calls for a separate administration and insisted that the party remains focused on keeping the state borders intact.
