Shillong: The Election Commission of India gathered 200 media and communication officers in New Delhi on Wednesday. They tackled the rising threat of digital misinformation. Attendees included nodal officers, public relations experts, and senior state department officials from 10 states and territories.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar told the group that the commission acts only through clear constitutional and legal frameworks. He warned officials to watch out for false narratives on social media. Kumar noted that record voter turnout proves people still trust democratic institutions.
Election Commissioner Dr. Vivek Joshi pointed to deepfakes and AI-generated content as major risks. He warned these tools are "aimed at undermining public trust in democratic institutions." Joshi instructed the staff to stick to official guidelines to push back against these digital threats.
Training covered the full election cycle. Officials practiced drafting press notes and managing electoral rolls. They also learned how to talk to young voters through Electoral Literacy Clubs. The commission wrapped up the day with demonstrations on polling and counting procedures to ensure every officer understands the process.
