Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials just overhauled the district Local Committee to tackle workplace sexual harassment. The move comes under the 2013 Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act. The Deputy Commissioner issued the formal notification to reset the panel.
This committee handles complaints from shops or offices with fewer than 10 staff members. It also steps in when employees need to file a grievance directly against their own employer. Internal committees are not mandatory for these smaller firms. The panel keeps the doors open for justice.
Additional Deputy Commissioner D. Kharshiing takes the lead as chairperson. Other members include Shillong Municipal Board Law Officer Ebhahmiki War Payntein, Grassroot Shillong-Nongkseh Kynton president Mayfereen Ryntathiang, and Shramakami NGO founder-chairperson Rebina Shuba. Dr. Shannon N. Sangma, an Assistant Commissioner, and District Social Welfare Officer Olivia C. Nongbri serve as ex-officio members.
The administration tapped 11 block development officers to act as nodal points. These officers cover the blocks of Mylliem, Mawphlang, Mawsynram, Mawkynrew, Mawkynrew, Pynursla, Shella-Bholaganj, Khatarshnong Laitkroh, Sohiong, Mawpat, and Mawlai. These appointees stay in their roles for a term lasting up to three years. According to the official notification, the new committee serves as a vital safeguard for local staff. The district aims to ensure every worker has a clear path for reporting misconduct.
