Shillong: East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal shot down fears that Bangladeshi nationals might use Khasi surnames to infiltrate the voter rolls. The Election Commission of India has a tight system in place to block ineligible people from the final list. Baranwal insists the safeguards will hold firm.
Booth Level Officers face a heavy workload. They must finish digitisation and home visits within a single month. Many residents need help filling out forms, adding to the pressure on staff. "The BLOs are indeed facing difficulties. It was a steep timeline for them to cover all households within one month and also ensure digitisation," Baranwal noted.
The revision process covers only those already on the 2025 rolls. It is not an enrolment drive for new voters. Applicants must prove their connection to the 2005 electoral records through a parent or immediate family member. These hurdles make it impossible for outsiders to sneak through.
Baranwal remains confident in the process. Any past errors in the 2025 list will get flagged and pulled during this review. The goal is simple: clear out the ineligible and keep the roll accurate. The vetting work continues as scheduled.
