Kohima: Dimapur’s chief veterinary officer Sentinungla Ao is cracking down on the dumping of dead animals in public. Roadsides, drains, and rivers are now off-limits for carcasses. Stop the dumping now.
These sites act as breeding grounds for disaster. The practice creates unhygienic conditions that spark fears of zoonotic diseases. Anthrax, rabies, and avian influenza could spread through these rotting remains. These piles also cause pollution and biohazard risks.
Ao set firm rules for disposal. Dead animals must undergo deep burial with lime. Keep the pits far from water sources and homes. Farms and slaughterhouses must handle their own waste on-site or at government-approved locations. Violators face serious consequences. The state will trigger penal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009. CVO Dimapur Sentinungla Ao said, "Violators found dumping carcasses in public places would be liable to penal action under relevant provisions of the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009."
