Shillong: A roof collapse in New Usmanpur killed a couple on Sunday night. The tragedy struck inside a ground-floor room at a house in H Block, Jai Prakash Nagar. Their child survived the fall. The roof gave way at 9:30 p.m. but emergency teams did not get the call until 11:30 p.m.
First responders pulled the pair from the rubble. Doctors at a nearby hospital declared them dead on arrival. Local residents pointed to the building's clear structural decay. Neighbor Sonu warned the family before the crash. He stated, "The condition of this house was very poor. The building was in a dangerous state. You can go further down the lane and see that the roofs of some other houses have also collapsed."
Police and civic leaders started a formal investigation. They want to know if negligence caused the death. The monsoon rains often trigger such disasters in the city. Another collapse hit Rohini Sector 16 earlier this month, leaving three dead and one hurt. Teams from the Delhi Fire Services, the National Disaster Response Force, and locals searched the New Usmanpur site. They moved concrete and twisted iron by hand to reach the victims.
