Shillong: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama formally received his Grammy Award on Wednesday at his residence in Dharamshala. Renowned sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan presented the honor, accompanied by his sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.
The award recognizes the album Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, which won in the Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording category earlier this year. The project blends the Dalai Lama’s teachings on compassion, peace, and human unity with Indian classical music.
Upon first learning of the win in February, the Nobel Peace Laureate expressed humility. He stated that he views the recognition as a reflection of collective responsibility toward the well-being of the global population. He added that he hopes the Grammy platform helps spread his message of peace and environmental care.
Tibetan officials have lauded the achievement. Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel praised the award as a testament to the power of storytelling in conveying universal values, while Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the Tibetan political leader, also shared his congratulations.
Beyond his musical collaboration, the Dalai Lama continues to highlight the ongoing struggle for freedom in his homeland. In his recent book, Voice for the Voiceless, he details his life in exile and the challenges facing Tibet since the Chinese invasion in 1950. The work offers a reflection on his journey from a young leader meeting Mao Zedong to his eventual escape to India at age 25.
