Shillong: A West Jaintia Hills resident lost over Rs 65 lakh in a sophisticated KFC franchise scam. The victim initiated the deal online before a fraudster posing as a Yum Restaurant India representative took over. After wiring money to multiple accounts, the victim finally contacted the official grievance officer. The official confirmed, "he has been cheated."
Thieves are targeting everything from heavy machinery to places of worship. Criminals stripped construction sites and ATM kiosks of batteries and copper wire. Churches in Mawtawar and Shillong reported break-ins, with thieves walking off with musical instruments and cash donations. Meanwhile, vehicle owners face a relentless string of thefts, with numerous motorcycles and cars targeted across the state.
Violence and illegal migration also marked the recent surge. Police discovered the body of 63-year-old Bonen T Sangma in Chandigre village. He suffered multiple injuries, and officers recovered a blood-stained axe at the scene. In a separate operation, BSF personnel intercepted 26 suspected Bangladeshi nationals traveling through West Garo Hills. The group admitted they entered the country illegally to find work in Kolkata and Chennai.
Authorities are also investigating document forgery and digital theft. Officials at the Rongjeng CHC found 17 fake birth certificates, while a West Garo Hills resident reported Rs 7.7 lakh stolen from his customer service account. Police investigations into these ongoing cases continue.
