Guwahati: Kaliabor is losing its plant diversity. Researcher Chiranjeev Bezbaruah reports that several local varieties of the fiddlehead fern, known as Dhekia, have vanished from the area. The plants can no longer survive the region's shifting conditions.
Rising global temperatures and erratic weather patterns are killing off native flora. The environment has turned hostile. Bezbaruah notes that these plants, once widespread across the region, are now entirely absent from their former habitats.
Human greed is making things worse. Indiscriminate mining and massive excavation projects in the hills and plains have shredded the local forest cover. These actions destroy the natural niches where these ferns thrive. Habitat loss combined with climate change disrupts the soil, moisture, and rainfall cycles that these species need to reproduce.
Bezbaruah warned that the situation is grave. He stated, "The changing climate is making the natural environment increasingly hostile to several plant species, threatening their survival and distribution." Shrinking green space puts extreme pressure on what remains of the local biodiversity.
