Kohima: Chumoukedima Town Council officials launched the Swachh Hunters initiative on August 24. They aim to rid the town of litter and plastic. The project follows the Solid Waste Management Rules and Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules of 2026.
The Self-Employed Women Association and the Chumoukedima Town Youth Organization lead the effort. These groups patrol busy spots like NH-29 and major town roads. They carry tongs to pick up trash, showing residents how to handle waste. They also track illegal dumping, blocked storm-water drains, and overflowing bins. Workers report repeat violators to the council office.
Street shows and public engagement events will push for better waste habits. The program follows a clear philosophy: "Hate the crime, not the person." The council wants locals and tourists to take ownership of their trash. ADC and Executive Officer of the CTC confirmed the goal is a spit-free and litter-free town, but success depends on active citizen participation.

Beyond simple cleanup, the hunters are tasked with walking assigned street grids to monitor garbage accumulation. The program is pushing a broader agenda of public mindfulness, aiming to frame trash management as a collective and enjoyable responsibility rather than a chore.
