Kohima: The Central Institute of Horticulture in Medziphema held a virtual meeting on July 29 to push for stricter nursery accreditation across the Northeast. Over 100 people joined the session. The group included farmers, entrepreneurs, and various state horticulture officials.
Dr. R.L. Raut, the CIH Director, led the digital event. He emphasized that reliable nurseries are the only way to get healthy, true-to-type plants to growers. Improving these standards helps the whole region. Dr. N.K. Patle, an Additional Commissioner from the federal Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, opened the floor. He stated, "the need to strengthen quality planting material systems through nursery accreditation" is a priority.
Experts broke down the process during technical sessions. Navanita Baruah Mahanta from the National Horticulture Board in Guwahati explained specific government schemes and accreditation rules. Dr. S. Rajan, the former leader of the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture in Lucknow, taught the attendees how to manage a nursery using scientific methods.
State representatives from Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh joined the talk. The meeting wrapped up with Dr. Raut pushing all stakeholders to adopt these new standards. High quality builds credibility. It also boosts long-term productivity for the horticultural sector.
