Cabinet Backs 1.86 Lakh Crore Green Power Plan

Shillong: The Union Cabinet greenlit the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme this Wednesday. The project targets an evacuation capacity of 135 gigawatts of renewable power. It carries a total price tag of 1,86,405 crore rupees. Officials aim to finish the work by the 2032-33 fiscal year.

The plan splits funds between two main areas. It earmarks 1,36,378 crore rupees for Intra-State Transmission Systems and 50,000 crore rupees for 50 gigawatt-hours of Battery Energy Storage Systems. These batteries will help manage power surges and grid congestion. They also keep the lights on when the sun is not shining. According to an official statement, the scheme allows for the "deployment of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at the Renewable Energy (RE) developer/generator end or any other location of importance for grid flexibility."

Central financial support hits 54,082 crore rupees. This cash helps cut transmission charges to keep consumer power bills low. State Transmission Utilities will run the show. Greenfield projects will use Tariff Based Competitive Bidding, while brownfield upgrades proceed on a Cost Plus Basis.

Transmission Service Providers will follow a Build-Own-Operate-Maintain model. The initiative creates jobs in construction, manufacturing, and grid maintenance. It serves a larger goal. The government wants 900 gigawatts of non-fossil capacity by 2035.
