BJP Lawmaker Asks James Sangma to Shield Charities From FCRA Rules

Shillong: Pynthorumkhrah MLA Alexander L. Hek wants to keep charities running. He sent a formal letter to Meghalaya Rajya Sabha member James P.K. Sangma regarding the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act. Hek worries new rules will choke legitimate non-governmental and Christian organizations. These groups provide vital shelter, healthcare, and education to the poorest citizens. They serve people regardless of tribe, caste, or religion.

Hek understands the government must maintain security and transparency. Still, he warned that broad regulations might punish those doing honest humanitarian work. He said, "Any unintended restrictions on such institutions could have a direct impact on millions of vulnerable citizens who depend upon their services."

The MLA highlighted the Missionaries of Charity as a prime example of selfless service. He noted that many organizations provide disaster relief and skill development. Hek referenced the late Purno Agitok Sangma to emphasize the importance of this work. He told the Rajya Sabha MP that his office must protect these institutions. Hek fears that failing to act will hurt the most marginalized people in the state and across the nation.
