Imphal: The inaugural Bishnupur District Olympic Games kicked off Wednesday at the DSA Ground. Local officials and athletes gathered under the theme One District, One Spirit, Khello Bishnupur. The event aims to spotlight grassroots talent across the district.
Asian Games medallist Naorem Roshibina Devi and Commonwealth gold winner Laisharam Monika Devi helped light the Olympic flame. Several Indian Super League footballers joined them. Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam hoisted the Games flag to officially start the festivities. Sixteen teams representing sports ranging from boxing to kayaking marched in the opening salute.
Konthoujam noted that these competitions prepare athletes for the world stage. He told the crowd, "Sports transcend barriers of race, caste, creed and religion by promoting unity, mutual respect and healthy competition." The minister reminded attendees that Manipur has produced 19 Olympians to date.
District Commissioner Pooja Elangbam thanked everyone for building this platform. Cultural displays including Pung Cholom and Dhol Dholok entertained the crowd before the first football match began. The competition runs through July 12.
