Guwahati: Thirty-three unemployed youths from Assam have been left stranded and financially devastated after falling victim to a sophisticated fake recruitment scheme. The ordeal began on April 20, when a government Industrial Training Institute in Tinsukia received an email claiming that electronics giant LG was hiring nearly 80 students for lucrative positions. Trusting the institutional lead, the students participated in a recruitment drive hosted by the ITI authorities.
By May 19, the group received what appeared to be legitimate appointment letters directing them to report for duty in Delhi by May 23. Many families drained their savings or borrowed money to cover travel costs, believing their children had finally secured stable employment. Upon arriving in the Delhi-NCR region on May 21, the youths were met by a man calling himself Shubham, who claimed to be an LG agent. He settled the group into a Ghaziabad hotel before collecting 6,000 rupees from each person for alleged training fees, accessories, and lodging costs.
The scam unraveled the following morning when the suspect disappeared, disconnected his phone, and left the group with no way to contact company officials. The stranded students faced extreme hardship in the summer heat without funds or food until their families managed to scrape together enough money for them to return home. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning how government ITI officials failed to verify the authenticity of the recruitment email before facilitating the journey. The principal of the Tinsukia institute has not responded to requests for comment regarding the screening process.
