Shillong: Arsonists torched a student's scooter in Lumparing Block-D during the early hours of Tuesday. The Assam-registered vehicle, identified as AS 01 GA 6206, went up in flames around 2.53 am. It was parked on the street. The fire completely gutted the bike.
Neha Gupta, the owner's sister, stated her family grew up in Shillong and holds no ties to Assam. The plate number remains the only connection to the neighboring state. "It is extremely painful to think that a vehicle could be targeted simply because of its registration number," Gupta said. Her brother relied on the scooter for his daily commute and studies.
The family wants answers. They asked Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to launch a probe and check local CCTV footage. They demanded an FIR, legal action against the perpetrators, and potential compensation for the loss. While the motive is not confirmed, the family fears the Assam registration triggered the attack. They seek safety and accountability, not conflict.
