Guwahati: Assam is gearing up for India’s first fully digital census with a focus on building a robust operational framework over the next two months. State officials and the Registrar General of India recently gathered in Guwahati to coordinate the Houselisting and Housing Census phase. This upcoming project will rely on mobile applications, online portals, and digital monitoring systems to streamline data collection.

The state has established a clear timeline for the process. Residents can engage in self-enumeration from August 2 to August 16, 2026. This period will be followed by a house-to-house collection phase led by trained enumerators from August 17 to September 15, 2026. To support these operations, the state plans to deploy approximately 83,535 enumerators and supervisors.

Preparatory efforts are already underway, including the activation of dedicated census cells, the delimitation of housing blocks, and the systematic training of personnel. Authorities are also prioritizing public awareness and ensuring that the necessary digital infrastructure is in place. Officials confirmed that all collected information will remain confidential under the Census Act of 1948, as the state government commits its full support to a successful implementation.
