Assam Muslim Community Opts for Goat Sacrifice to Promote Harmony

Guwahati: Muslim families in the Settlement Road locality of Sribhumi have decided to forgo cow sacrifices during the upcoming Eid celebrations. By choosing to sacrifice goats instead, residents aim to honor the longstanding tradition of brotherhood and peaceful coexistence shared between different religious groups in the area.

Local resident Abdul Hakim Choudhury explained that the community has long prioritized mutual respect among all faiths. This decision follows years of encouragement from local religious leaders who have urged followers to move away from cow sacrifice in favor of goats. The community intends to maintain this new practice in the future to ensure continued social cohesion.

To meet the festive demand, residents are sourcing goats from Lanka because local production in the Barak Valley remains limited. Each family plans to sacrifice one animal and distribute the meat to the poor and needy as part of their observance.
