Guwahati: Assam Education, Plain Tribes and Information Technology Minister Ranoj Pegu inspected the NHPC Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh on August 3. He checked the reservoir, control room, and the Early Warning System to verify safety. The 116-metre-high structure currently holds water at 92 metres. It maintains a 15-metre cushion to handle heavy rain. Discharge rates sit at 3,800 cubic metres per second.
The dam handles massive volume. On July 13, the site recorded an inflow of 13,800 cumecs. Engineers released 12,500 cumecs under controlled conditions to protect downstream areas. Officials follow strict National Dam Safety Authority protocols. The reservoir stores excess water to moderate floods. The minister addressed residents in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Majuli directly. He told locals the dam is operating properly.
"After personally inspecting the project and interacting with the engineers, I am convinced that the Lower Subansiri Dam is safe and that the release of water is carefully monitored and fully under control," Pegu said. He added that the government prioritizes local livelihoods. Various agencies continue to work together to keep the facility running responsibly.
