Assam highway damaged by rains as locals allege poor construction

Guwahati: Recent pre-monsoon rains have caused significant damage to the newly constructed National Highway 127(B) in the Tamarhat area of Assam's Dhubri district. Sections of the road connecting Tamarhat to Grahampur suffered severe erosion, as the drainage channels meant to manage water runoff were washed away.

Commuters now face hazardous conditions due to large potholes and loose boulders on the highway. Residents expressed alarm that the infrastructure, which is a major project, has already started to deteriorate before the monsoon season fully begins.

Public criticism is directed at J Infratech Pvt. Ltd., the agency tasked with building the Srirampur to Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge section. Locals allege that the project suffered from poor engineering and the use of substandard materials, despite the large amount of public funding allocated for the work. Some community members have further accused the contractor of using administrative influence to suppress complaints about the quality of the road.

In response to the damage, residents and local leaders are calling for a high-level, independent inquiry into the construction process. They are urging the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and local officials to conduct emergency repairs and ensure the road is safe before further weather events occur.
