Guwahati: The introduction of a Uniform Civil Code bill in the Assam Assembly on May 25 has sparked immediate political friction. Opposition leaders from the Congress party have raised concerns regarding the necessity of the legislation and the lack of consultation with other political groups before the bill reached the floor.
Jakir Hussain Sikdar, working president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, dismissed the bill as a political project for the Bharatiya Janata Party. He questioned how the proposed changes would actually benefit the public. Beyond the UCC, Sikdar also took aim at the state government over rising fuel prices and the resulting financial strain on residents.
Other members of the Congress party are maintaining a cautious approach while they review the specifics of the proposal. MLA AK Rasheed Alam noted that a proper evaluation of the bill's provisions, merits, and potential flaws is required before the party can finalize its stance.
In contrast, the governing party remains optimistic about the bill's future. BJP MLA Biswajit Daimary stated he is confident that the assembly will pass the legislation during the current session, clearing the way for its eventual implementation throughout the state.
