Guwahati: Assam BJP MLA Ritu Baran Sarmah says the state government's Orunodoi scheme currently reaches nearly 40 lakh women. The program delivers monthly cash payments of Rs 1,250 to help the needy. Recipients include widows, separated women, unmarried women, and Divyangjan. It keeps families afloat. Over 38 lakh people are already on the rolls, and the state plans to add more eligible residents soon.
Sarmah argues the aid does more than just pay bills. It serves as a tool for broad economic change. "One of the main purposes is the empowerment of women and the alleviation of poverty. The Orunodoi scheme targets both of these goals," Sarmah said. Other states are now looking at this model to copy it for their own citizens.
The government is also pushing the Lakhpati Didi initiative to boost local business. This program gives women and Self-Help Groups grants between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000. These funds help recipients start businesses and find stable work. The government wants these women to stop relying on handouts and build their own success.
